Linda started writing This Time We Lose after thirty years in education. She'd spent her career watching young people worry about the future. Climate change, artificial intelligence, what kind of world they'd inherit. The question that wouldn't leave her alone was this: what if we solve the survival problem but lose everything else? What if we build a future so controlled, so managed for efficiency, that no one even remembers what it felt like to be free?
That question became this novel. A story about three friends who begin to see the cracks in a system that was supposed to save humanity. A story about choosing your own future, even when the cost is everything.
When Linda started writing in 2019, these themes felt safely fictional. Climate collapse was a slow-moving threat. AI was advancing but still limited. Isolation was possible but unusual. By the time she finished, reality had closed the gap. This Time We Lose is the book she wishes someone had written five years ago.
